How we calculate the avoided CO2
A transparent, cautious model. It relies on life-cycle assessments from the Boavizta API, the ADEME study on refurbished products and ADEME’s Base Empreinte.
The calculation protocol in 3 key steps
- 1
1. The footprint of new
For each model, the Boavizta API calculates the footprint of an equivalent new device: manufacturing, transport, use based on the country’s power mix, end of life.
- 2
2. The share avoided by reuse
We apply the low bound of the 2022 ADEME study: 64% for a smartphone, 46% for a tablet, 43% for a laptop or desktop.
- 3
3. Independent check
Results are compared with the 2025 Fraunhofer study on reuse. Recycling is counted separately, with a cautious benchmark for e-waste.
MIPS Indicator: What the planet does not extract
The MIPS indicator (Material Input Per Service unit) measures the natural resources mobilised to make a product: ores, water, energy, moved earth. For a digital device, this ecological rucksack weighs far more than the device itself.
Extending the life of a computer or smartphone avoids new extraction. It is what the planet does not have to produce.
